Hotmail is the original name of the free web-based email service created by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith in 1996. In 1997, Microsoft purchased Hotmail for $400 million and renamed it MSN Hotmail. In 2013, Microsoft changed the email service to Outlook.com
The original spelling of the email service was HoTMaiL, putting the emphasis of HTML within its name. When the service first launched, it included features such as a 2 MB storage space, virus scanning and spam filters. Since then, Outlook.com includes Skype integration, a "sweep" auto-delete feature, one-click filters and a two-step verification system. As of 2015, Outlook.com supports POP3, EAS and IMAP protocols.
